Restored to original.
Finished by hand.
Concours-level classic car restoration in Sydney. Rust, paint, custom builds — and the lost art of finishing steel with a file, not filler.
File finishing is the art of making a panel dead-straight in the steel itself — read by hand, shaped with a body file, no plastic filler hiding the work beneath.
It is how panels were finished before filler existed. The high spots are taken down stroke by stroke, the surface checked with the flat of a hand until the reflection runs true. It is slow, unforgiving, and takes years to learn.
Very few shops still do it. We never stopped. A panel finished in the metal will still be straight in fifty years — long after filler would have cracked and lifted.
"The file doesn't lie. Either the metal is straight, or it isn't."
Two generations, one bench.
Growing up in the shed
Every weekend was spent in the workshop beside Dad — learning to read steel with a file in hand, the old-school way, with no shortcuts.
Learning the craft properly
Years on the tools before ever touching a customer's car. Rust repair, panel work and the patient discipline of finishing metal by hand.
The next generation carries it on
The same standards, the same tools, the same refusal to bury a panel under filler — now trusted by collectors who want the car done properly, once.
— Masters Restorations & Bodyworks
Everything under one roof, finished to one standard.
"The panels came back dead straight in the metal. You don't see work like this anymore — it's a different league."
"They found rust three other shops missed and repaired it properly. The finish is flawless and it'll last."
What is file finishing, and why does it matter?
File finishing is the art of straightening a body panel in the bare steel — no plastic filler. Using a body file, the surface is shaped stroke by stroke until the reflection runs true. A panel finished this way stays straight for fifty years or more. It is how panels were made before filler existed, and it is a near-extinct skill. At Masters Restorations & Bodyworks, it is how we have always worked.
